The Indonesian-Chilean Chamber of Commerce and Culture highlights the recent developments in the Chilean and Argentinean energy and mining sectors. The Chamber recognizes these advancements as crucial steps towards a more integrated and prosperous South America.

Chilean ports have been identified as strategic outlets for the oil and gas from Argentina's Vaca Muerta field, as discussed during the 39th Committee of Integration of the Lakes. The convention, held in Neuquén, Argentina, brought together authorities from key regions in both countries, emphasizing the importance of energy, trade, and border development.

In 2024, Chile further solidified its position as a global leader in mining exports, particularly in the lithium market, where it accounted for 78% of global exports. The country also maintained its position as the world's top exporter of copper, with shipments exceeding US$50.155 billion, representing 15% of the global total. The copper concentrate and cathodes markets were particularly dominated by Chile, making up 29% and 20% of the global market respectively.

Chile's strong position in the global export market is a testament to the country's efforts to modernize and diversify its economic and trade agreements. In 2024, Chile was the world's largest exporter of 24 products, demonstrating the country's productive capacity and diverse export portfolio.

Meanwhile, Argentina achieved a trade surplus of over US$3 billion in its energy sector in 2025, largely due to strong oil exports to the U.S. and Chile. This development further emphasizes the growing interconnection of the South American energy market.

Chile's dominance in the global copper and lithium markets continued in 2024, despite a year marked by global economic uncertainty. The country's strategic position in international trade was further underscored by its success in the "Pisco War" against Peru, where Chile managed to gain significant market share in the international spirit market.

In a series of recent developments, the Indonesian-Chilean Chamber of Commerce and Culture has noted a drop in the volume of Chilean salmon exports in the first quarter of 2025, despite the value of these shipments increasing by 5.1% during the same period. This comes ahead of the Trump administration's expected tariffs.

President Boric and former Brazilian President Lula are set to review the key Bioceanic Corridor project, which has sparked Chinese interest. The aim of the meeting is to strengthen bilateral relations between Chile and Brazil and boost logistical and commercial integration.

Chilean Pisco producers have called for the current promotion plan to be converted into a permanent state policy. Amid increased uncertainty and rising US tariff rates, the call emphasizes the urgent need to explore new markets. The Chilean Pisco deserves consistent support and long-term strategies, according to sector leaders.

After nearly a three-month suspension, Chile has successfully reopened the Peruvian market for apple exports. This comes as a result of a new agreement between the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (SENASA). The Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, praised the development, highlighting the direct benefit for affected producers.

In light of the potential impact of recent US tariff policies, the government of President Gabriel Boric has stepped up inter-ministerial coordination to protect the Chilean export sector. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Economy, and Agriculture met to evaluate a range of direct and indirect support measures, particularly in the face of a more uncertain global context.

An estimated 8.3% of Chile's exports could be subject to tariffs set by the United States. A study indicates that the effects on our economy will be limited compared to other countries in the region. The 10% tariffs would come into effect on April 5th, with higher tariffs for some countries applying from April 9th. However, the US decided to pause for 90 days for countries with a rate above 10%, reducing it to that minimum for the said period. China was the only nation excluded from this three-month relief.
