The Chilean Government, under President Gabriel Boric, is coordinating measures to support Chilean exporters in response to the recent tariff hikes in the United States. During a meeting with ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Economy, and Agriculture, the necessity to strengthen sectoral risk monitoring, intensify trade with other countries, and diversify Chilean markets and products was discussed. The meeting also addressed possible adjustments to ProChile's Export Fund and the incorporation of financial risk management tools for exporting companies.

A study reveals that 8.3% of Chile's exports would be subject to tariffs set by the United States. The 10% tariffs would take effect on April 5th, with higher tariffs applying from April 9th. However, the U.S. decided to implement a 90-day pause for countries with a tariff above 10%, reducing it to this minimum for the said period. Countries like the European Union, Japan, and India are left with a temporary tariff of 10%. China was the only nation excluded from this three-month relief.

Meanwhile, Chilean walnuts are making their mark in India, playing a key role in the national agri-food expansion. The recent business tour to India, which included a Chilean delegation from the walnut industry led by the Chilenat association, highlighted the growing interest in Chilean walnuts in the Indian market. Despite current tariff barriers reaching 100%, exports have continued to grow.

Chilean exports showed positive figures during the first quarter of 2025, reaching USD 27.048 billion, a 5.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Non-traditional and service exports, which recorded an increase of 6.3% and 28% respectively, were particularly noteworthy.

On the international front, Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country and the seventh largest in terms of gross domestic product by purchasing power parity, joined the expanded BRICS+ group in January 2025.

In a meeting held in Washington, Chile and the United States agreed to establish a roadmap to strengthen their bilateral economic and trade relationship, despite the new tariff rates. They agreed to advance on three thematic axes and set a new meeting for June in Santiago, within the framework of the Free Trade Agreement.

The Chilean-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Culture closely observes the unfolding of recent global events that could impact Chile's export sector, particularly the reinstatement of global tariffs by former U.S. President Donald Trump. This move, as analyzed by former Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz, threatens the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and the United States, which has been in place for over two decades. The Chamber echoes Mr. Muñoz's call for immediate consultations with the U.S. Trade Representative's office to clarify this situation.

Georgina Losada, Santa Fe's Secretary of Foreign Trade, also shared her insights, warning of the potential consequences of a global trade war. Despite the U.S. tariffs not directly affecting Argentina, an indirect impact could be felt in the province of Santa Fe. She highlighted the necessity of swift action to protect local productive sectors.

Meanwhile, Chile's Ministry of Finance announced that copper exports, a significant part of Chile's international trade, will be exempted from the U.S. imposed tariff. This comes as a relief amidst the tension, considering the recent acquisition of four copper projects in the Antofagasta region by Nobel Resources Corp.

On a positive note, the commencement of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India has been celebrated by the president of Fruit of Chile, Iván Marambio. He predicts that this agreement could potentially double Chile's fruit shipments to India, making it a market as significant as Brazil, currently Chile's fourth largest buyer of fresh fruits.

The Chamber reaffirms its commitment to monitoring these developments and providing necessary support to Chilean businesses during these challenging times.

The Chile-Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Culture is reporting on several significant developments in Chile's international trade and diplomatic relations this week.

Chile's dried plum exports continue to thrive, reaching 78 countries in 2024 and totaling 88,897 metric tons, equivalent to USD 255.119 million. This superfood's global reach and economic impact are a testament to Chile's robust agricultural sector.

However, Chile's economy faces threats from the recently announced 10% tariffs on Chilean products by the U.S. This measure, announced by President Trump on April 2, 2025, could potentially impact Chile's economy, which sends 14% of its exports to the U.S. Key products such as salmon, fruits, and wines may be affected, while copper and timber exports are expected to remain unaffected.

According to economist Jean Paul Quinteros, the tariffs could also impact sectors such as oil, leading to increased fuel prices. It is also predicted that there will be an effect on food and technological products imported directly from the U.S., impacting Chile's export competitiveness. In response, it is expected that Chile will seek new trade links.

In diplomatic news, Pablo Arriarán Ahumada has been appointed as the new Chilean ambassador to the People's Republic of China. A seasoned diplomat with extensive international experience, Arriarán's appointment comes at a crucial time for relations between the two countries.

Despite the challenges, Chile has so far successfully navigated the trade war instigated by President Trump. However, the longevity of this resilience remains uncertain, as indirect effects of the conflict could potentially impact Chile's economy in the coming months.

In response to the potential tariffs on copper, the Chilean government, through the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco), has submitted a letter to the United States defending its position as a "strategic and reliable partner". This move underscores the gravity with which Chile views the possible imposition of tariffs on its copper exports.

The Indo-Chilean Chamber of Commerce and Culture is pleased to report a series of significant developments on the international stage. These events highlight the strength and resilience of Chile's diplomatic and economic relations.

The Chilean Government has announced the appointment of Pablo Arriarán Ahumada as the new ambassador to the People's Republic of China. Arriarán, a seasoned diplomat with extensive international experience, assumes this critical role at a pivotal time in the relationship between the two nations. His diplomatic career includes ambassadorial roles in Egypt and Ecuador, and second-in-command positions in the embassies of Ecuador and Argentina. He has also had assignments in countries such as Gabon, Kenya, New Zealand, and the United States.

Chile has managed to successfully navigate the trade war instigated by U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite the uncertainty this conflict has caused for the global economy, Chile has shown resilience and even reaped some benefits. However, the future impact of this conflict on the Chilean economy remains to be seen.

In response to potential U.S. tariffs on copper, Chile, through the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco), has submitted a letter to the United States defending its position as a "strategic and reliable partner". The administration of President Gabriel Boric has expressed concern over the possible imposition of tariffs on copper by the Trump administration and is closely monitoring the situation.

The Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) presented a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce defending its role as a strategic and reliable partner in the supply of copper, in light of potential tariffs by the U.S. "We sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce defending the strategic and reliable nature of our country's copper supply," said the Chilean ambassador to the U.S., Juan Gabriel Valdés.

In other news, the inaugural arrival and departure of the cruise ship Star Voyager, which underwent a USD 50 million refurbishment, was celebrated in Jakarta, strengthening the regional presence of the iconic Dream Cruises brand.

Finally, Chilean President Gabriel Boric has embarked on a trip to India with the aim of strengthening relations and attracting investments from the world's most populated country.

In a significant stride for Chilean exports, the country's salmon has been certified as a "healthy" option by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As the second most exported product from Chile, salmon generated over $6.3 billion in 2024, with the United States being its main market.

However, the global economic landscape is not without its challenges. Chile finds itself between China and the United States amidst global uncertainty. The Chilean Government, along with representatives from the agro-export sector, have formed a technical group to address new agricultural tariffs imposed by the United States, the second destination of Chile's silviculture and livestock exports. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of the measures scheduled to come into effect from April 2.

The President of Fruits of Chile, Iván Marambio, has expressed concerns over the growing trade war driven by Donald Trump and its potential repercussions on international trade. Marambio warned about the negative effects of tariff measures and market closures, emphasizing that Chile's strategy has been to open up to the world.

Adding to the concern, President Donald Trump announced that from Wednesday, April 2, the United States will impose tariffs on imported agricultural products. The move aims to boost local development and growth in the sector, but has caused unease among associations and guilds in various countries, including Chile.

Amidst the official visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, spoke about the tariff war driven by Donald Trump and its possible effects on Chile's copper and agricultural exports. Boric stressed that the issue is "extremely delicate" and reaffirmed Chile's commitment to multilateralism in international forums, rejecting unilateral decisions.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Culture has been closely monitoring the recent developments in international trade and commerce. In this regard, we are pleased to share some of the significant events that have unfolded this week.

Firstly, Indonesia has fortified its alliance within BRICS, an international bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Following an official request during Russia's presidency, Indonesia was granted membership earlier this year. This week, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Serguéi Ryabkov, conducted an official visit to Indonesia, discussing further cooperation within the BRICS framework. Both parties acknowledged the progress made in the institutional development of BRICS, particularly under Russia's presidency in 2024.

Meanwhile, in the United States, President Donald Trump announced his plans to impose new tariffs on several countries next week. This move aims to balance the duties applied to US exports, sparking uncertainties about a possible trade war.

Despite these global trade tensions, Chile's export sector has shown resilience. Interestingly, the United States is not Chile's top trading partner, with exports exceeding $37 billion. This information was revealed in a recent report by the National Customs Service, dispelling concerns about the impact of Trump's proposed economic measures on Latin American countries.

Chilean exports have started 2025 positively, with a 10.4% annual increase in January, according to the Central Bank. Total exports amounted to $10.431 billion, while imports also grew by 8.3%. The export sector's strong performance was largely driven by the mining industry.

Furthermore, Chile's foreign trade began the year with record amounts and an increase in the value of copper shipments. The Central Bank reported the performance of exports, imports, and copper shipments, the country's star product, in January.

Lastly, Chilean fruits are seeking to enhance their presence and growth at Fruit Logistica 2025. Despite Europe being the fourth destination market for Chilean fresh fruits, the last seasons have shown significant recovery, with an increase of over 10% last year and almost 15% this season, with more than 135,000 tons exported to various European markets compared to the same period last year.
