The Chilean-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Culture closely observes the unfolding of recent global events that could impact Chile's export sector, particularly the reinstatement of global tariffs by former U.S. President Donald Trump. This move, as analyzed by former Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz, threatens the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and the United States, which has been in place for over two decades. The Chamber echoes Mr. Muñoz's call for immediate consultations with the U.S. Trade Representative's office to clarify this situation.
Georgina Losada, Santa Fe's Secretary of Foreign Trade, also shared her insights, warning of the potential consequences of a global trade war. Despite the U.S. tariffs not directly affecting Argentina, an indirect impact could be felt in the province of Santa Fe. She highlighted the necessity of swift action to protect local productive sectors.
Meanwhile, Chile's Ministry of Finance announced that copper exports, a significant part of Chile's international trade, will be exempted from the U.S. imposed tariff. This comes as a relief amidst the tension, considering the recent acquisition of four copper projects in the Antofagasta region by Nobel Resources Corp.
On a positive note, the commencement of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India has been celebrated by the president of Fruit of Chile, Iván Marambio. He predicts that this agreement could potentially double Chile's fruit shipments to India, making it a market as significant as Brazil, currently Chile's fourth largest buyer of fresh fruits.
The Chamber reaffirms its commitment to monitoring these developments and providing necessary support to Chilean businesses during these challenging times.
